Drinking Puts College Students at Risk for Dui and Other Charges

The first few months of your freshman year of college are out of the way and you are feeling established in your new life. You might be feeling optimistic about your future and happy with your new friends and social life, as well as a little overwhelmed about your classes and studying. For you and many other Tennessee students, drinking in college can be a good way to socialize, let off steam and cope with a heavy workload. For this reason, you need to understand the risks you might face if you drink too much or make a mistake while intoxicated.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism warns that binge drinking - or drinking to excess - is a problem for nearly two out of three college students across the country. In studies, about 60 percent of students between the ages of 18 and 22 drank alcohol during the past month, and many make it a regular habit during their school years. The following points illustrate the consequences you might face involving college drinking:

  • Underage drinking charges if you are under 21
  • drunk driving record if you are caught driving with a blood alcohol content above .08 percent
  • Charges involving trespassing, property destruction or assault
  • Academic penalties, including failing a class, losing a scholarship, getting suspended from your athletic team or being expelled from school
  • The social stigma and embarrassment of being charged with a crime
  • Possible limitations on your career options

Enjoy your college years, but act sensibly

When you drink legally and responsibly, there is nothing wrong with having a good time while in college. However, you need to understand how to make wise decisions when alcohol is involved. To avoid criminal charges, set limits on how much you plan to drink, and make sure you have a designated driver or a safe ride home.

If you have been charged with a crime, speak with an experienced criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible.
