How to Answer Common DUI Questions

There are certain things you never want to do when the police pull you over on suspicion of drunk driving. You certainly do not want to follow the lead of one Tennessee woman who chugged an entire beer as the cops placed her in handcuffs.

While it is easy to not chug a beer, you also want to be careful of how you answer certain questions police often ask during a stop. You do not want to potentially incriminate yourself by answering a question the wrong way. You can help your DUI defense by answering the following questions correctly.

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"

This is a common question regardless if the police suspect you are under the influence of alcohol. You do not want to make a guess because you could end up with higher fines. The best way to answer is to say, "No, I do not know." Do not give the officer any more ammunition than he or she already has.

"Where are you coming from?"

You also want to avoid answering this question if you can. The officer wants to see if you just came from a bar or a party. You do not want to lie, but you also do not want to sit silently. You can say you wish to exercise your right to remain silent. However, if you have just gotten off work or have nothing to hide, then you can answer truthfully.

"Did you have anything to drink tonight?"

Some police officers get straight to the point. A lot of drivers actually admit to drinking "only one beer" because they think the officer will let them off easy. It is vital to remember that officers will assume you drank much more if you say you only had one drink. Again, you want to assert your right to remain silent unless you are genuinely sober.

If you have been arrested, you need to know that there are many potential defenses to a DUI charge. Speak with an experienced DUI defense lawyer as soon as possible.
